A Beginners Guide to Home Decorating

When designing any room in your home you need to find a central theme or piece to focus on. This could be something as simple as your wall art or more something more significant like a sideboard. Whatever it is you will need to draw attention to that piece and then have it “flow” throughout your room. Of course with each piece your style will be dramatically changed, so lets look at a few options.
When decorating a contemporary home, art is a good base to start with. A abstract sculpture or wall hanging that is well lit(meaning lit correctly) and displayed centrally will always make the right statement. Then you can pick your furniture pieces from this to help focus on this spot in your room. Some modern acrylic chairs can blend seamlessly without obstructing the view or a contemporary swivel barstool could be used for a sparse yet impacting statement.
Now perhaps you are more of a European decor type. These are always wonderful rooms to decorate. Choose a elegant piece or set of furniture to really show off in the room and then design around it instead. With European style you will want plenty of fabrics and rich almost decadent wallpapers. This coupled with dim lighting from a brilliant chandelier will make you the envy of the neighborhood!
Then there is the “bachelors pad”, a style all of its own (for better or worse). These places need to have a almost random feel to them. Perhaps a eclectic sports theme with leather seating would sum up this style the best. With all things though you need to find one thing in your life to balance the room around. Once this is picked try and arrange the furnishings to place it at a great vantage point. Whether its looking at your signed Major League baseball or a prized wine collection everyone should know your interest.
