A Vital Design Element – Accent Rugs

Design themes often center on a single piece or group of elements which create the color and style carried out through the room or house. Typically, accent rugs are an important contrasting element to stand up to bold paint on the walls or powerful artwork. Furthermore, the right rug will become the piece which ties the period or style of a room together.
Some examples of styles of area rugs include Persian, Moroccan, and Contemporary designs from Italian and American designers. The Middle Eastern rugs made in the traditional style are easily recognizable by their unique patterns, but to a person skilled at differentiating between regions of production, each has distinct traits that set it apart.
Persian rugs are originally manufactured by hand in Iran, and they are not cheap. However, respectable imitations are made in other areas such as Turkey and Pakistan. The main rug producing regions in Iran are Isfahan, Tabriz, and Mashad, and are made from wool. An expert can determine the authenticity of the piece by examining the knotting on the back of the carpet, and can even identify the region by the colorful patterns woven in.
Moroccan tapestries have very different patterns and textures than Persian ones, and tend to be thinner as well. They are also referred to as Berber rugs, and come from urban and rural areas, made with traditions passed down through the generations. Examining Moroccan floor rugs online illustrates how unique each of these accent pieces can be, with a large dose of local flavor distinguishing every one.
While accent rugs are a beautiful way to liven up a room or give it warmth, they need to be practical as well. Always find a rug pad to use beneath them on wooden or tile floors to prevent slipping. Also, because most of these rugs require dry cleaning, consider keeping them out of high traffic areas.
