Brown Patch Disease in Lawn

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Garden

Brown patch disease is a fungal disease that can affect several types of grass. The types that usually suffer most are St. Augustine, Kentucky Blue, Bermuda, Bentgrass, Centipede and some type of ryegrass. Lawns in areas with high humidity, or lawns that get a lot of shade, are usually affected. St. Augustine suffers especially during the spring and fall months, when the weather turns cooler and more humid.

The disease can start with small spots, but spreads fast in a circle or in a pattern, which resembles a horseshoe. The patches can make the grass look unattractive, and sometimes parts of it can die. Sometimes the inner part of the circle can get better but the outer part remains brown. Younger parts of lawns die more easily than older plants.

In warm season grasses, the disease often forms a circle that has a yellow outside ring. You can pull the wilted blades off very easily. The problem can start with small, round patches of grass that are first dark and soon become brown and wilted. Brown patch can develop easily in temperatures that range from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, in moist conditions, in nightly temperatures that fall under 68 Fahrenheit, and if there are other type of fungi in your grass already.

Some of the best ways to prevent the disease, or to control it once it has appeared, are correct fertilization and appropriate watering. Always choose the right fertilizer for your grass type and for your soil. It is best to water early in the morning and then let your lawn dry, while the morning dew also escapes. Because high humidity can be one of the causes of brown patch, try to plant trees and bushes far apart from each other so that some sunlight can get through.
