With the economy being in the rough shape that it is, many individuals and home owners are finding increasing difficulty paying for their basic expenses and the bills like their mortgages for example. This can make the necessary home renovations and products that many folks would like to do next to impossible due to the costs, especially projects like installing a traditional garage. Thankfully, there are a number of practical and fairly affordable solutions, and one of the best ones to consider is going with carports, specifically steel carports.

Steel carports tend to be a much better choice than there aluminum equivalents, due to the fact that steel tends to be much more durable and long lasting. But this kind of convenience can come at a cost, as aluminum carport and be much more affordable and will often offer most of the same advantages that their steel equivalent will. However, steel carports tend to be much more capable in the various weather conditions that these carports are likely to be exposed to, due to the fact that they can be weather treated much more readily than aluminum carports.

You can also save yourself quite a bit of cash in the form of going with steel carport kits for your project, these are essentially unassembled carports which are sent directly to you for assembly. The reason why these are so much more affordable is because you don’t have to spend the money on labor are hiring a contractor to assemble unit for you and your property. The other benefit, is the fact you can typically customize your unit a bit more when you’re assembling the unit yourself, typically most home owners like to be able to personalize their carports. Regardless of what will you go about getting your steel carport, make sure that you check with the local authorities have been sure that you can legally install this unit on your property.

Cars are very valuable objects, and proper protection is very important if you want to make the life span of your car last longer. One good way to protect it is to put it in a garage to guard it from the changing weather, snow, intense heat and sand that could ruin your car. But if the luxury of a garage is not available to your home, you can create a carport as an alternative to your garage. Carport is a roofed structure that offers security to your car, but the protection that it offers is more limited than that of a garage. Adding a carport can be a great convenience to you and your family. It can also greatly add to the resale value of your house. A carport usually does not have four walls—only one or two walls—and it can be attached directly to your house, or directly stand on its own.

Building a carport is easier compared to constructing a garage. The first thing you need is to have a plan. There are many free carport building plans that can be downloaded from the internet, but since you don’t have to pay for it, choosing the right free carport building plans that would fit your budget and lifestyle is very important. Having the right plan can be useless without the right factors for construction of your carport. The right location is very important. It should be built in a place where you can fully utilize its convenience. The materials to be used should fit and should be stable so that it could hold the entire structure into place. Solar panels would be a great help if you live in a place where the sun usually soars high. The design of the carport usually complements the design and color of the main house. And before the construction, you should know the local laws regarding it, since there are some communities that require licensed builders before building the carport.

The carport is a much more popular choice of covering for your vehicles than a garage for a couple of reasons. If you do not live in an area with hard winters there is simply no real reason for having walls on your garage and a carport is really just a little garage without walls. If you do live in an area with a great deal of high winds and snow however a carport is not as much protection as you would probably need, especially from winter storms.

There are two general types of carports, the stand alone and the attached. Some carport kits also come with an attached storage shed at the head of the carport. This type of flexibility can give you a great start on carport design ideas. Once you have decided whether you want an attached carport or stand alone and whether you want the shed attached, next you will have to decide on materials. This is very important to any carport design ideas because the material you use can decide not only the durability but the entire look of the carport and most of your carport design ideas will go right out the window. Carports are made of plastic, wood or metal. Plastic is the least expensive but is also the least durable. Most people choose wooden carports as a compromise.

The internet has a great number of carport design plans. You can find websites with design eBooks for the different types and materials of carports. You can also go to your local home improvement store and see the different carport kits available there. Finally you can hire a general contractor to design and build your carport for you. The addition of a carport, especially a well designed one, will also increase the value of your home significantly.

If you plan to introduce a decoration to your garage, you should definitely consider brown rugs for your garage floor.

The garage is undoubtedly one of the few places in a home that’s hard to decorate — because obviously this is the area where cars, vans, and what-not are parked when not in use. Moreover, old boxes that may be unwanted inside the home may also be stored in the garage. Sure, most people might not expect you to have a beautifully-decorated garage, but this does not mean that you have to slack away and submit that garages are understandably disorderly and not pleasing to look at. A tried-and-tested and conventional method to spice things up and take your garage a notch higher is by introducing area rugs — and when rugs are involved, you can’t possibly go wrong with brown rugs to do the trick.

Brown is a colour that’s misunderstood by many. Some people tend to think of brown as dull or bland — but once you see the beauty of the colour brown, you would be surprised with what you’ve been missing out. Brown comes in all shades and varieties; it can come in its faintest variety which is verging on being pale yellow, or it can be in its darkest variety, which is a deep, rich, and dark brown variation. This spectrum of shades is perfect for all garage interiors, as you only need to determine which shade works best for the aesthetic theme of your garage.

Rugs, specifically brown rugs, are also the best decorating options for your garage floors because they can easily be introduced to any room. Unlike carpets that require major work and are hard to peel off without causing permanent damage to your floor, brown rugs spread easily, and they can also be easily taken away for cleaning or rug maintenance.

Moreover brown, as opposed to other colours, tends to blend in well with others because of its neutral attribute. Apart from this, brown is generally a comforting colour — it welcomes without being too overbearing, and it adds warmth also without being too generic. Brown is innately imbued with the gift to make guests feel at home, and you can just imagine how your guests would react when they see your beautiful brown rugs adorning your garage floor.

So you have a garage. But what happens if there are problems with the garage door and you do not know when and how to start repairing it? Before you panic because of the problem that needs to be repaired, you need to identify what the problem is.

The kind of garage door that you have will determine the problem. The most common problem that you will encounter when a swinging door is used is the cooped up tension. The spring tension, an important part of the door structure, may be loose or misaligned. To get to the root of the problem you need to examine the door while it is closed flat. Tools like screwdrivers and levels can help fix garage door problems.

In most cases, the common problem is either misalignment or lack of lubrication. If you hear an odd noise when you try to move the door, it may need lubrication. If you look intently and see that there is a problem with closing the door completely, misalignment must have been the problem.

<img src="http://www.housetohomeguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/CarraigeGarageDoor-300x207.jpg" alt="" title="CarraigeGarageDoor" width="300" height="207" align="right"" />If you think the door is misaligned, try looking at the hinges. They may be askew, in which case you need to use a hammer or wood to pound them. Any flat surface also needs to be straightened out for the door to be maintained. If this does not solve the problem, try oiling the hinges. They may be covered by rust, which leads to an inefficient performance when you try to open and close the door.

The door frame can also be a problem. By checking the sides and angles of the frame you will find out if there are odd angles that need to be repaired. You can fix garage door problems by simply realigning everything. If the frame is badly damaged and is showing more serious dents, it may need to be replaced.

You may not be a fan of history but there is no harm in learning a bit of garage doors. As you well know there was no need for garage doors long ago as there were no cars to park them and people did have no requirement for storage spaces.

The idea of garage succeeded the invention of cars. Most people acquired cars and need for storage space for the automobiles. This was the classic definition of necessity being the mother of inventions. The only outbuildings in those days were used as storage carriages for horse and buggy. A carriage was a bit similar to today’s garages in that it was used as a storage unit for everything that was used for transportation. When people first acquired cars they use to store them next to their horses.

The initial kinds of garages were similar to the modern parking lots found in most homes today. With need the number of cars increased and this led to the expansions of these garages and creation of garage doors. In those days there were privately owned garages and privately owned ones that people paid a little money in order to park their cars in them. Just like todays clopay residential garage doors, there were varying kinds of doors.

After the first idea of a garage door many people started thinking of ways of creating their own garages closer home where they can park their cars safely. The origin of the word garage is attributed to a French word ‘garer’ which means to shelter or offer protection.

Afterwords people started becoming creative and this led to the invention of sliding tracks for garage doors. This led to the design of different kinds of garage doors. Better garage doors popped up and more space was created with the creation of garage doors that required minimal space to operate.

Nowadays you can find all sorts of garages and garage doors that can suit any kind of home. People also started using garages as storage spaces other than that of storing cars. This made the garages more versatile.

There are many choices of roofing materials that fit a garage just fine, but if you are going to build or replace a roof yourself, there are some that are easier to work with than others. Here are three of the easiest and cheapest, that will still give good results:

Plastic roofing sheets
Corrugated plastic roofing sheets are light, cheap and often transparent. They are also easy to install, whether you are replacing a few of them or roofing a new garage. Different sizes and types exist, but the basic principle is the same. The sheets are nailed or screwed onto wooden rafters. The corrugation allows for easy and watertight overlapping between sheets, and the screws or nails often come with little foam or rubber washers, that keep rainwater out from the holes needed for fastening the sheets to the rafters. The transparency means you can have plenty of daylight, even in a garage with no windows. Not having to buy windows will cut costs a lot, if you are building a garage or carport.

Metal roofing materials
Often these are sheets made of steel or aluminum. If they are steel, they will either have a coat of strong paint or be zincplated. Some are even covered with a vinyl film, which can be had with different looks, like faux wood grain. Steel is structurally strong and often quite cheap, while aluminum is less prone to oxidize – even when left untreated. It often costs more than steel though. Installing metal sheets is not much different than installing plastic sheets, although the work may be a bit heavier going. The advantage of metal over plastic is that it is generally tougher and longer lasting.

Roofing shingles
Many roofing materials come in the form of shingles, but the type I am specifically thinking about here, is asphalt roofing shingles. These are cheap, bitumen/rubber pieces that are nailed to plywood sheets known as decking or underlayment. These are very easy to install and can last for years. The shingle form means the roof is easier to repair, if there is only a small hole or leak. The disadvantage may be, that leaks can be harder to detect because of the plywood. If done correctly though, there should not be big problems with leaks.

For those people who use their garage as more than just a place to park your vehicle, you might be wondering how you could clean up the Garage floor area. The surface of the floor in a standard garage is concrete. This is a difficult type of surface area to keep clean. It is made especially difficult by having cars drive and park on it, which might leak various fluids from time to time. Many people use the space in their garage to hold outdoor parties or have a rummage sale. If the floor surface is stained it greatly detracts from the atmosphere you are trying to create.

You might choose to use some type of garage floor covering to either hide or protect your floor. You can find several options available for doing this cover up. There are a few types of floor tiles which are specially designed for use on cement surfaces. These are easy to install yourself and come in a wide variety of colors. They have a special rubberized material which is easy to clean if any spills should happen to occur. The tiles are created to stay in place and are durable enough to have a car drive on them.

Using these tiles is better than trying to lay down a piece of carpet or matting yourself. A carpet piece or traditional door mat is not designed to repel the types of fluids associated with cars. You will end up with the same dirty and stained surface as you had with the uncovered floor. The various tiles also make cleaning out dirt and debris such as leaves, much easier because you can simply sweep them out of the area. By using some type of specially formulated material on your cement surface, you will make a cleaner and more enjoyable atmosphere for your garage.

There are two main types of spring-loaded garage doors, the one with extension springs and the other has a torsion spring. The extension spring works, as the name implies, by stretching (or extending) when your door is closed and retracting when the door is open. You will be able to see the two springs on the ceiling, one by each runner for the door. The garage door torsion spring is located on the ceiling and directly in front of the door between the two runners, and works by the spring causing the drum to turn, causing the cable to be wound on it and opening the door.

When you are working on replacing the extension springs, you must have your door open and make sure it is secured in that position. The power behind these springs can be of deadly force, so you need to be very cautious. You need to remove the broken garage door springs and use it when you buy new ones so you are sure to get the correct diameter, length and wire size. Even though only one is broken, you need to replace them both at the same time. You also need to check your pulleys and cables and replace them if they are worn or damaged. Attach the spring, weaving the cable through the pulleys as they are on the unbroken side. Repeat this on the other side, and then carefully close the door. If your springs are not adjusted correctly, the door may not open and close easily, and can be potentially dangerous.

The garage door torsion spring is much more complicated and time consuming, not to mention dangerous to replace. For this repair, the garage door needs to be secured in the closed position. Your door may require either one or two springs and you will have to put them on a tube (yes, this sounds easy, but we are not talking about a spring the size in an ink pen with the force of a rubber band powered airplane). Each torsion spring is a stationary cone, winding cone and coils, these have to be layered on a tube in the correct order along with the nylon center bearing and plate and the cable drums. Both the cable drums and the winding cones are color coded for the different sides of the garage door, and installing them on the wrong side will not allow your door to function right.

Now you still have to get this contraption lifted up and attached to the garage, then the cables brought up and inserted into the drum, getting the slack out, then winding the springs to their proper tension. If there is a shortage of head space, you are warned not to even start this job yourself. These springs have so much force, they could cause injury or death if something goes wrong, so you really need to study the actual step by step instructions before you decide to tackle this type of repair, and you should not attempt to try it without someone there to help you.

Before attempting to do this, make a list of all the parts you should be replacing and price them. If you are going to take the time to take it apart, you really want to replace everything now, and not have to tear it back apart in a couple of weeks or months. Now, as promised, the easiest way to do a garage door spring replacement is to hire a professional to do the job, and it might be safer, too.

For most households, the garage has become an unspeakable place, it is where all our unloved and unwanted stuff gets unceremoniously stacked in a pile to die. Before long, the car gets pushed out and parked under a tree, while our junk stacks up higher and higher. Finally, it gets to the point where nothing else will fit, and no one really knows what is in there anymore. If this sounds familiar to you, then you have no doubt considered giving the garage a big clean out, but it’s so difficult to know where to start, and how to ensure that, after putting in all that effort, you don’t end up right back where you started from.

The best place to start is to bite the bullet, and drag everything out. You will have no idea how to tackle the job until you can see it all laid out before you, and the act of pulling it all out gives you no more chances to procrastinate. The mess needs to be cleaned up, you can’t just leave it lying all out on the driveway. If you make this bold move, make sure that you have a good run of weather coming up. The last thing you want is for it to start bucketing down with rain in the middle of this task. Once you have everything out of your garage, separate it into three piles; Things you definitely need, things you don’t need, but someone else may be able to use, and stuff that has no right being kept in the first place. You need to be ruthless during this project, and cut out as much clutter as you can. The best way to quickly get rid of the second pile is to have a garage sale, which is a whole different topic for another day. The pile of stuff that should have been thrown out to begin with should be thrown out. Be careful that you are disposing of any chemicals in the proper manner. If you are unsure of how to dispose of something, your local council should be able to help you out.

Once you have decluttered and got rid of as much stuff as possible, it’s time to start formulating a plan, a vision of your ideal garage. This will mean different things to different people, but the basic outcome you are looking for is minimum mess and maximum organisation. One of the main lifesavers when it comes to garage organization is the storage cabinet. Garage storage cabinets are specifically designed for strength and durability. Many of the items you will store in your cabinets will be quite heavy and bulky, so it’s important to choose a cabinet that will withstand a bit of a beating. The most common type of storage cabinets for garages is stainless steel. Keep in mind that your garage is more exposed to the elements than other rooms in your house, and stainless steel will resists rust from an overly damp environment. Many people try and save money by using second hand wooden cupboard for storage, but they don’t stand the test of time, or the rigors that they are subjected to in the garage. If you want something that will last, then a steel or aluminum cabinet is your best choice. You aren’t limited to the plain metal look, however. Many garage storage manufacturers have cabinets available in a rainbow of colors. Many people like to match the color of their car with their cabinets. There is nothing wrong with a color coordinated garage.

Freestanding Bike Stand

There are, however, some things that you want to have easy access to, or that are just too awkward to store in a cabinet. For this reason, it’s important to leave space on your walls for a decent shelving system. The type of shelves that you need will depend on the type of items that are being stored in your garage. For example, if you have a family of bike riding enthusiasts, then there are special racks that you can purchase specifically designed to store bikes on garage walls. This is also true for sporting equipment, such as golf clubs, fishing reels, and even kayaks. For everything else that doesn’t need a custom shelving solution, you should consider getting a shelf system that is modular, rather than a solid one piece metal shelf. This way, you can shape the shelf to suit your garage size, and you personal needs. They may cost you a little more, but in the long run it is worth it for the extra versatility that they provide.

If you are a bit of a handy person, and like to tinker around with engines, or do a bit of woodwork, then it’s imperative that you leave yourself some space for a decent workbench. Now workbenches tend to take up a lot of room in the garage, so I wouldn’t be getting one unless you really need it, however there are a couple of designs that can help you to minimize the amount of space lost. The first is the moveable workbench. By getting a workbench that has wheels on it, you are able to roll it out of the way into a corner when it is not in use, and pull it out into the middle of the garage when it’s time to do some handy work. The other option available is the folding workbench. There are workbenches available that will literally fold away to nothing, allowing you to slip it away behind a cabinet when it is not in use.

Something that is not necessarily going to help with organisation and storage, but is of the utmost importance if you are serious about turning your garage into a neat and useful area, is the flooring. It may seem like an unneeded expense, but having your garage floor fixed up makes a world of difference, and will make working in this space a pleasure. There are a few different options available for garage floors; by far the most effective (and also the most expensive) is liquid granite, that coats the entire floor in a smooth epoxy finish that will last for decades. The benefit of having this type of floor is that it is resistant to oil stains and chemical spills, which happen all too often in a garage environment. If you cannot afford such an extravagance, then consider PVC tiling. These tiles come in squares, usually about 200 cm wide, and are designed to be interlocked together, meaning that they are versatile enough to use in any garage space. They are also available in different colors and styles, allowing you to really personalise the look of your garage floor.

Racor PHL-1R Pro HeavyLift
4-by-4-Foot Cable-Lifted Storage Rack

So you’ve filled up all your cabinets and shelves, but still find yourself with a pile of junk and nowhere to put it? Look up! Even with your cars parked in the garage, there is a huge amount of unutilised space right above the bonnet and all the way up to the ceiling. Luckily, garage storage system manufactures have realised this and have designed some products that can be used for overhead storage in the garage. Once you have a platform attached overhead, you will find that it is the perfect place to store camping equipment, irrigation, and boxes and tubs that aren’t needed all that often. Some of these storage solutions come with smarts as well. For example, you can have your overhead platform installed with a pulley system, so that you can lower it when you need to access something, rather than climbing up a ladder. If you really want to go high tech, you can even get platforms that work on a hydraulic system with a remote control. Unless you really know what you are doing, I would recommend that you get a professional in to install this item, the last thing you need is a ton of stuff crashing down on the bonnet of your car (or even worse, your head)> If you are handy, check out Ask The Builder’s awesome tutorial on overhead garage storage.

Akro Mils 44 Drawer Cabinet

Along with the main items mentioned above, a good garage storage system should also have places to put all those items that you use on a regular basis, and need to access easily. This includes power tools, screwdrivers, hammers, nails and mowers. Pegboards are a great way to hang you tools and keep everything in it’s place, and having a rack to hang shovels and forks keeps them out of the way and keeps you from tripping over them all the time. A cupboard with small drawers in it works perfectly for storing screws, nails and bolts. For super efficiency, label the front of each drawer so that you know exactly where everything is. It can get frustrating when you need a particular bolt, and have to open 25 drawers to find the one you want.

Some items need to be stored safely and securely; in particular, chemicals, pesticides, and petrol should be kept out of the way of children and pets, and preferably away from the heat as well. It’s a good idea to have a lockable cupboard specifically for these items, to avoid in contamination or accidents.

Many people have problems in their garage with pests. The garage is a perfect breeding ground for all sorts of little critters, including mice, rats, spiders and wasps. Keeping you garage neat and tidy, and having a everything stored away in it’s place, will really help to alleviate this problem. You’ll still need to keep an eye on them and have a bit of a clean out of cobwebs every now and then, but it will be so much easier once you have a proper system in place.
