Choosing a Shingle Roof
Posted by Marylou Biederman in Renovation, Uncategorized
Of all the materials currently used to produce roofing shingles asphalt is by far the most popular for residential use in many areas. The large choice available ensures that they can suit almost any home in any location. The top end roofing shingles are of very high quality and will have a long lifetime. This will keep down the future costs of any maintenance or repair work.
Due to the huge range on offer asphalt roof shingles are suitable in many different climates. They can be produced to resist the effect of very high or very low temperature and also be designed in a way that makes them algae resistant. This is particularly useful in areas where heavy rainfall is a common occurrence.
Asphalt roofing shingles are generally classed as being either organic or fibreglass. The organic options are felt based and being replaced by fibreglass based shingles in most areas. This is due to the fact that they are heavier, do not last as long and do not have equivalent levels of resistance to fire. Organic shingles are also less environmentally friendly. Fibreglass shingles offer long lifetimes and much greater resistance to fire.
The fibreglass asphalt shingle options come in two designs which are called three-tab and architectural. The latter are generally preferred as they will last longer and fit together forming better joins than the three-tab shingles. They are more expensive but of higher quality in general.
Architectural shingles produced from fibreglass are a good option for many homeowners if they can afford the high initial costs. The investment will usually prove to be a wise one as considerable amounts of money will be saved on maintenance and repairs in the future. Long term benefits rather than short term savings should be considered when installing roofing shingles.
