Common Home Propane Heater Use

Posted by Marylou Biederman in General

While propane heaters used to be sold more often for outdoor purposes, especially for those planning a camping trip or traveling to a cabin that is without electricity, propane heating is becoming much more popular these days for general home use.

Propane heaters are usually quite fast to fire up and to begin generating heat. They are popular as supplementary heating, especially in areas where the electricity is somewhat unstable at times. Great for a back up heater in any home, they are also fine to use as portable heating within a home providing certain safety precautions are taken.

Modern indoor propane heaters now have built in security and safety options, whereby many heaters can automatically detect oxygen levels in a room. If the oxygen levels begin to drop, the heater is programmed to automatically shut down. This prevents the build up of carbon monoxide in a room. The fact that propane heaters now have these added safety features has taken away much of the fear that many people have of using propane heating indoors. If you are planning on buying a portable propane heater for auxiliary use or if you are thinking about installing propane heating throughout your home or in your main living areas be sure to buy a newer model heater and only buy one that has a safety shut off option. Some propane heating needs to be vented, however the instructions should clearly state so if it is needed.

Propane heaters are often used to heat up garages during winter. Many of the standard type of garage propane heaters are made to mount on the wall, up high. This is helpful in that the heater does not take up floor or bench space.  Installation of these type of heaters is fairly simple though as the heater is quite heavy you will probably need to have someone help you mount it on the wall.

Propane patio heaters are also very popular. As they are used outdoors, there are not the same safety concerns with their use. Bigger  heaters are able to heat up a bigger radius however usually these heaters need to be positioned fairly close to where people are sitting for optimum heating.
