DIY Wardrobe Assembly – Time Saving Fasteners

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Furniture, Renovation

In the production of a fitted wardrobe most time is spent on the assembly of the actual carcasses and installation. This has resulted in numerous speed assembly systems being developed, allowing for ease of use even by the most novice of DIY enthusiasts.  The most well known is System 32. The system however only deals with the placement and final fittings and alignment thereof within the carcass; it does not involve the assembly of the carcass itself.  Most carcasses are assembled using either dowels or biscuits that ate glued together before being clamped. This procedure requires the use of specialized machines and equipment not commonly fount in the novice DIY enthusiasts’ toolbox.

The marketability of self-assembly furniture required the development of fasteners, that were not only idiot proof, but also only required the use of basic tools found in any toolbox. Tools such as: screwdrivers, Allen keys, drills and even magnets. Keeping the tool requirements to the simplest and minimum did not restrict developers and engineers that came up with numerous time saving purpose made fasteners now incorporated in all furniture manufacture and joint fastening, especially for the ever-popular fitted bedroom wardrobes.

The most well known simplest and time saving range of these fittings is the CAM Fittings and dowels. This being the easiest to use they are completely idiot proof. It involves the lining up of pieces placing the metal pins in provided holes, and using either a Flat tipped or Phillips screwdriver turning the connection head pulling the two pieces together. Entire assembly is done in minutes requiring only a screwdriver. Disassembly is just as simple.

wandutensilio_05_03_vs18625The system was developed around the lines of dowel joinery. The metal pins are actually known as dowels and are available as rapid assembly dowels, knock in dowels and screw in dowels. With numerous purpose-designed dowels, catering for angular joints as well. The connection head is known as a Cam fitting the most popular being the Rastex range. They are available from most well stocked hardware stores. These fittings can however only be used with boards with a thickness exceeding 12mm.

Another popular system is known as Everfix. And as the name suggests it’s a permanent fixture and cannot be disassembled once assembled.  It consists of either a threaded stud which is threaded on one end and resembles a metal pin on the other. The other stud is smooth on both sides and is known as a Duplo.  What makes this system work is the Everfix knock in socket. A versatile tool is does not allow for angular joints. It is simple and allows for permanent fixtures that are easily done by hand.
