Five Tips For Buying a New Kitchen Range Hood

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Kitchen

Whilst cooking on a range, you will mostly likely want to keep all the cooking smells and smoke from circulating in the kitchen and around the home. The most efficient way to achieve this is with range hoods. If decide to purchase one of these appliances you should consider a few point beforehand. The following is a list of tips to buying range hoods.

Extractor Fan:

The fan is one of the first things to think about when buying a new hood. The choice is basically between a rotary fan or a fan in the shape of a barrel. Barrel shaped fans will often move more air and are also less noisy. If you want a cheaper option then choose a rotary fan, which is still highly effective. Being able to adjust the speed of the fan is an important feature.

CFM:

The next factor for consideration in the purchase is the CFM rating of the hood. This acronym refers to cubic feet per minute and is a measurement of how much air the hood can move. The higher the CFM the better, as it will remove more of the air out of the kitchen and provide better ventilation.

Lights:

I would advise purchasing a hood with lighting. This provides another sources of lighting over the cooker and allows you to see what you are doing better. There are usually one or two bulbs in most hoods. The bulbs can also be conventional incandescent types or halogen.

Size of Hood:

The size is another vital aspect to think about if it is to function efficiently. Essentially it needs to be as wide as the range you are cooking on. If it is not as wide it will not be as effective at removing all the odors, smoke and particulate matter from the cooking. Therefore, measuring the size of the range is important prior to purchase.

Ducts:

The exhaust system in the hood is the next aspect to consider which is the ducts or venting. Some systems use vents to take the extracted air away from the kitchen and expel into the outside world. The other option is the ductless or ventless type that uses filters to clean the air. After the filtration, the clean air is recirculated back into the kitchen. Some designs use a combination of the two methods.

These are just a few of the tips to think about when buying range hoods. Using them will make sure you get a model which is suitable for your needs and, more importantly, works effectively and efficiently at cleaning the kitchen air.
