Choosing the Right Garden Water Features

Posted by Joshua in Garden

A garden water feature is a term used to refer to large fountains that form a centerpiece in the garden. A number of different materials can be used for these fountains, although slate, granite, or hard stone are the most common. Stone is usually used to provide strength and durability to the fountain; plaster and metal can be used as well.
There are also numerous styles of garden water features; some may only be few inches high while others can be over six feet tall. If its job is to provide a centerpiece to the garden then it should be fairly large.

Determining the appropriate size of your fountain can be difficult, having the right type however can truly enhance a garden’s beauty. There are a number of modern features available made from metal and other materials, these fountains can look great in some places but they are meant more for indoor areas or rock gardens. A fountain for a green garden should be as natural looking as possible, this way it will be able to blend into its surroundings and create and ambiance of peacefulness.

Although stone is the most natural type of waterfall to have, it is very heavy and can be quite difficult to transport. If you do not want the cumbersomeness of stone then you can still get a similar effect by using fiberglass or synthetic stone. Not only are they much cheaper but they are also light and easy to carry. They can also be made to look similar to stone, letting the area retain its natural look.

When choosing water features for the garden you should be mindful of the types of plants that surround it. Color coordination is important and allows you to coordinate the landscaping shades of your garden. Light colors are usually preferable as they look portray a happy atmosphere, especially on bright days. Brown can also be used as in blends in well with surrounding foliage. Try to keep away from gaudy colors unless you are trying to use your fountain to make a visual contrast.

garden water featuresSize is also important to consider. If you want the waterfall to be a centerpiece of the property then you should buy one that is slightly larger than the surrounding foliage. Do not make it too large though or otherwise it may look gaudy or awkward. If you do not have a budget for a large centerpiece, you could mount it on a stand to make it appear larger. Be sure that the stand looks good or is covered by plants.

The three main factors that come into account are your own personal tastes, the size of the yard, and how much money you have to spend. You do not necessarily need water features for gardens in order to make a good impression, a grand waterfall may not be much different that a small fountain. Also, keep in mind that the larger the fountain is, the more it will cost to run and maintain. Manpower will also be required to move the fountain and create the accommodation for it and you can either hire professional workers or ask some friends to help you.

A garden fountain piece should be located on a flat foundation because any slope in the surface will cause the water flow to appear crooked. Soil usually slopes over time so it would be better to create a simple cement foundation underneath. Some waterfalls and fountains may also require circulation chambers in order to filter the water. Many models will not have this included so you may have to buy it separately and locate it nearby the garden feature.
