Grouting Tile Made Simple

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Bathroom

Applying grout to a tiled surface may sound like a difficult project. However, it is actually a very simple process. Grout is used to ensure that tile, when laid, will properly fit together and to make sure that it does not move or float over time.

You will first need to fill a bucket with enough water for the size of your project. Be sure to read the grout manufacturer’s instructions for advice on the proper amount of water for the different project sizes. Before mixing the grout, protect your skin by putting on rubber or latex gloves and safety goggles.

Next, add enough grout powder to the water until the suggested amount has been added. The mixture should be the same consistency as that of peanut butter for small grout joints and for larger grout joints it should be the consistency of bread dough.

Before applying the grout, ensure that all joints are dust free. Begin working the tile grout into the tile joints by using a rubber grout trowel. Work the grout at about a 30 degree angle across the entire length of the project, then again in the same manner in the opposite direction until all the joints have been filled.

Now turn the trowel to a 90 degree angle and go back across the tile surface to remove excess grout. Sprinkle some dry grout directly over the tile joints and rub it in a circular motion until all the joints appear uniform.

Allow the grout to dry for 30 to 40 minutes before wiping away the residue from the tile with a damp sponge. After the grout has dried for 72 hours, apply a grout sealer with a small paintbrush. Allow the grout sealer to dry for at least 24 hours.

Grouting tile can be a simple and rewarding project that will add beauty and detail to any room in your home not to mention save you money for doing it yourself.
