How to Clean Stains From Black Granite
Posted by Marylou Biederman in General
One of the toughest building materials available today is granite. It is so hard that only diamonds and other granite pieces can scratch the surface. It is nearly impossible to break with normal use, under typical conditions. Sealing the black granite worktop helps to prevent staining. On the other hand, even black granite surfaces can absorb liquids and materials from spills over time, as it is a somewhat porous material. Wine is a very harmful substances for staining a granite surface. Sometimes simple water can be absorbed, leaving a noticeable stain.
Today, granite countertops in black are highly desirable in kitchen remodeling and new home construction. While black granite coordinates with both wood grains and steel or metal kitchen utensils and appliances, it is fairly simple to maintain. Not seen very often, evidence of staining is occurs very rarely. This is the reason for choosing black over other color options. Though this type of surface is resistant to stains, some substances will leave a distinctive mark, like wine, tea, oil, coffee and milk. Even water will work into the material, if left standing for a long time. This can cause the counter to loose some of its shine and color.
An important consideration in keeping a granite counter top looking good is to wipe up liquid and food spills right away, before they soak in. When this is done, it will be less likely that your counter top will show signs of staining. Recommendations are to use a mild dish detergent to clean the surface periodically. Alternatively, a stone cleaning product is available from many stores that offer granite counter tops. Always remember to wipe the surface with a wet cloth, then dry after cleaning with soap. This helps prevent the soap from soaking in as well.
If you notice spots on your granite surface from oil or milk, a mixture combining a cup of flour with two tablespoons of peroxide can be applied and left to dry for several hours. It can then be wiped off with a cloth or sponge, which will remove the stain. For marker or ink stains, use acetone, which is the same product used in many nail polish removers. For stains made by products with no fats, like wine, coffee or tea, you can make a solution of plaster and bleach, leaving it on overnight before wiping clean.
Keep in mind that spills are much easier to clean up as soon as they happen, which will reduce the likelihood of permanent staining on your new black granite surfaces. If stains should happen to occur, the tips provided above should help eliminate them and keep your surfaces looking good.
