How To Plan Basement Remodeling For Small Spaces
Posted by Marylou Biederman in Renovation
Basement remodeling for small spaces should be planned with only one idea in mind. Basement bedrooms should be as spacious as possible to counteract the possible lack of light and the lower ceilings.
How to Decide how large to make basement bedrooms
It’s really easy. Ask yourself what’s above the basement area you’re planning to remodel. If the total space is the size of one room above, then you have the space for ONE room. If your basement is the total square footage of the entire floor above please make the rooms below a little larger just to compensate for the fact that there probably are few or no windows and the ceilings will be lower and therefore there will appear to be less space. You will need a minimum of 125 sq. feet for a double bed. The basement bedrooms that are well planned will include a storage unit for bedding and towels or linen because it’s no fun to run up and down to get them. You need a closet for clothes, a dresser and a night table or two. Measure the furniture you need to include and plan the bedroom size based on practical usage, not on how many rooms you can cram into your poor little basement.
Easy Tips — Basement Remodeling For Small Spaces
1. Use an awkward pillar as the centerpiece around which a bar or round table is built. If it’s a bar, stools can be pulled up and the pillar itself can be used for a wine rack, glass rack, or even have shelves for bottles and drinks.
2. Do not add walls. Leave your space open.
3. Do not buy armoires and shelving units and try to fit them in. Build shelves into the basement’s natural odd spaces, below the stairs, in corners that will go unused, against walls that can be long and narrow and take up less floor space.
4. If the ceilings are low do not add dangling lights, use embedded halogen or track lighting systems that are flat or use wall appliqués.
5. Use hardwood, tile and shiny surfaces on the floor instead of carpet. You want to try to create the illusion of space through reflection – tile or ceramic floors, mirrors, glass, chrome, marble…anything that reflects and does not absorb.
Remember: the size of your basement bedrooms should be larger than the ones above that have windows and higher ceilings. And when planning basement remodeling for small spaces that are not the full size of your floor space above, do not divide the area into rooms but keep it open as much as possible.
