Ikea Garage Cabinets

If you do an online search for Ikea garage cabinets you may be sorely disappointed by what you find at the Ikea site. Simply put, while Ikea is well known for its own custom furniture and cabinets, it is not really focused on garage cabinets or other garage storage solutions.

The results you find at the Ikea site and/or in the company’s catalog will be freestanding shelving units, brackets for the wall and maybe some floating shelves. You can still get great ideas from Ikea, though, if you just use your imagination and look at the company’s kitchen and bathroom storage ideas.

Kitchen cabinets are much like garage cabinets in that they mount to the walls or sit upon the floors. They have to be durable and withstand a lot of use. They need to keep stuff neatly stored away, but readily accessible. What’s more, they often need to hold a heavy load. (Have you ever considered how much a cabinet holding lots of dishes weighs? Or a pantry full of canned food?) You would do well to consider Ikea’s kitchen cabinets in addition to the popular brands of garage cabinets like Husky, Coleman and Craftsman as you investigate garage storage systems.

If the space you are working with is relatively narrow, then buying kitchen cabinets may offer a workable alternative. Kitchen cabinets are made to be attractive, plus we all know that it’s tough to beat Ikea when you are looking for cost-effective storage solutions. Another little tip: If you live in an area where craigslist is popular, you may want to keep an eye out there for Ikea cabinets people put up for sale that you can use in your garage.

Bookshelves and etageres meant for the living rooms of a house can also work well in the garage, provided they meet the durability requirements of the space. Wall units or floor units, workbenches or kitchen “islands” — they, too, can inspire creative garage storage solutions.
