Increasing the Lifespan of Your Dining Table

For many people, their dining room is the place where their family gathers to enjoy a meal together. In a time where modern technology rules our lives and where we are seeing less and less of each other, it’s nice to have a set place where everyone can gather and enjoy each other’s company.
The dining table and chairs that you have in your home are things that need to be looked after – not just because they are an expensive item of furniture, but because they are the ‘sacred’ place where your family gets together.
Keeping your dining furniture out of direct sunlight is a good way of protecting it, and will enable it to retain its color (since the sunlight will fade it). Another thing you should try and keep your furniture away from are heaters (such as radiators) and air conditioning units, since they have a bad effect on wood.
Apart from these ‘ground rules’, there are a few simple practices that you should follow in order to increase the lifespan of your dining furniture. First of all, always use a table cloth, place mats (for plates) and coasters (for glasses). This will help to protect the surface of the table and will give it a layer of defense against spilt drinks (which should always be cleaned up immediately).
Secondly, take the time every so often to brush the dust off of your table (whether it looks dusty or not). Leaving dust on there will cause harmful bacteria to flourish, which will then eat away at your table.
If you want to think long-term and you’re currently looking for a table, you might want to think about getting a round dining table. The reason for this is because they have no edges to them they’re a lot less likely to get chipped or scratched. That being said, you need to have the right kind of room (i.e. an extremely large one) in order to fit in a round table that’s big enough for a whole family, but it’s definitely something to think about.
