Most Popular Antique Clocks: the Grandfather Clock

Posted by Marylou Biederman in General

The antique grandfather clock is by far the most popular type of antique clock acquired by collectors and non-collectors. Grandfather clocks come in an array of shapes, types, design details, style concepts, and features. That being said, it is important that you know how to identify these types of antique clocks to ensure that you’ll find the exact variant or model that you are looking for. To help you do that, make sure to stringently assess the following criteria:

  • The clock’s style and body carvings – In general, grandfather clocks are categorized into two types — the Comtoise and Bornholk variety. Comtoise grandfather clocks are known for their port belly case. Also known as Morbier clocks, they feature intricate French designs and distinct body curves. Meanwhile, bornholk grandfather clocks showcase a tall wooden box that is driven by a pendulum. These are Danish antique clocks that were produced from 1745 up to the 1900’s
  • The clock’s top crown – The top shape of a grandfather clock is available in four distinct styles —- the split-pediment, round top, flat top, and bonnet top. Split-pediment and flat top are usually found on traditional grandfather clocks. Those with round top styles feature circular shapes at the clock’s top carvings. Meanwhile, grandfather clocks with a bonnet-style top are usually symmetrical, and include sophisticated wood carvings.
  • The clock’s key chain or winding – Grandfather clocks has two types of winding. The first one is the 30-hour grandfather clock. It uses a chain to wind a clock, which must be wounded every 30 hours. The other type is the 8-day grandfather clock. It includes a dial and uses a key to wind the clock. As the name implies, the clock must be wounded every 8 days.

Like the majority of antique clocks (such as an antique mantle clock and antique wall clock), grandfather clocks are typically made from wood.  Mahogany and oak are the usual type of wood species used to produce durable grandfather clocks. Overall, grandfather clocks are attractive timepieces that are certainly worthy investments.
