Options for Wicker Furniture

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Furniture

One of the more popular looks in outdoor furniture design for the backyard or patio is the wicker style. Furnishings which are made of wicker are composed of natural wood pieces woven tightly together on large commercial looms. Even with the use of these heavy industrial machines, the manufacturing of natural wood fiber material furniture is still a long, time-consuming process. The lengthy method translates into higher dollars for the purchaser’s bottom line price. A customer will have to pay quite a bit more, often twice as much, for natural wicker furniture items than they would need to pay for similar styles made out of man-made fiber materials.

Wicker furnishings made from synthetics are comprised of materials like resin, polyethylene, and fiberglass. These ingredients protect the product for years from the ravages of the outdoor elements like the sun, wind, and foul weather. These products can be used and enjoyed trouble-free for many years to come with no additional cost for care or treatment.

Natural wood wicker is made from rattan, cane or bamboo. These organic materials become more prone to wear, tear and dry rot over time than their man-made fiber counterparts. As a consequence, some producers apply a chemical treatment process to improve the product’s long-term durability. Some manufacturers will even go so far as to treat their product with UV and waterproof coatings to provide additional protection for their manufactured furnishings which are specifically targeted for outdoor use.

Outdoor wicker furniture is produced in a variety of designs and styles for every customer’s particular taste, such as barrel-type chairs, high-back throne-types, settees, sofas, and tables. A caution for any potential customer is to be aware that not all wicker chairs or sofas come with a cushion. In fact, they are often produced and sold without any seat cushions. It is important to keep in mind that one of the most uncomfortable types of chair material in the world is wicker. The addition of cushioned seats or pillows are definitely recommended to ensure a customer’s optimum comfort and satisfaction.

Many indoor wicker furniture pieces made from natural weave can also be purchased as finished or unfinished pieces. Unfinished pieces can be painted or stained in any color the consumer desires. Traditional wicker furniture is usually marketed in white, wood-grain or black. In recent years, more garden-type colors like green and brown are being incorporated and promoted, as well. The versatility of wicker has also fostered its use indoors as a classy accessory in the bedroom or den, or as a completely put together four-season room ensemble.
