Overview Of Concrete Anchor Bolts

Posted by Marylou Biederman in General, Renovation

If you are planning on installing something into a concrete wall or floor, you have probably realized that you need some type of anchor. An anchor is a device that usually accompanies a screw or bolt because the material being drilled into cannot be grasped by the threads on the hardware. They are commonly used for dry wall, sheet rock and cement materials.

Concrete anchor bolts are used to attach other materials to concrete floors or walls. A concrete anchor is different than most drywall or sheet rock anchors. Typical anchors are made to be pushed all the way through a wall. A device that looks like a butterfly’s wings is the anchor and expands once it reaches the other side and grabs on once the bolt or screw is tightened down. Other drywall anchors use plastic cylinders as the material the screw can grab onto. Concrete bolt anchors however are made of metal and are usually in two pieces that come together to form a cylinder. The user must drill a pilot hole in the concrete and pound the anchor into the wall. The cylinder is typically threaded and the two pieces expand away from each other when the bolt is threaded through them, securely anchoring the bolt into the wall or floor.

Concrete anchors have many applications for commercial use as many buildings are constructed with concrete walls. These are also useful for residential use when finishing a lower level of a home such as a basement. Walls and studs for a finished basement must be anchored into the floor as nails and screws are not practical and will only damage the cement. They are also commonly used when attaching items to concrete basement walls such as electrical boxes, shelving or other items.

Concrete wall anchors come in a variety of sizes and lengths for different applications. They are inexpensive, retailing for 3 to 7 dollars for a hand full of anchors. They can be found at larger home improvement stores such as Lowes or Home Depot as well as at hardware stores. Some hyper markets such as Meijer or Target carry pre-packaged anchors though they may not have a great selection.
