Patio Cushions
Lounging about on the patio is a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon, but what are you going to be lounging on? There are many, many types of patio furniture to choose from, much of it solid or with interlocking straps. For real comfort, however, patio furniture with cushions allows a level of comfort that the other styles lack.
The fabrics that are available for patio cushions are quite diverse. Acrylics come in an array of colors in many shades, either solids, plaids, stripes, tweeds or prints. The modern acrylics also are UV resistant, mold resistant and water resistant, making for a long-lasting cushion. The practical folk who make these cushions make them with zippers, so if the covering of the cushion becomes damaged for any reason, a new cover may be purchased for a lesser price than the entire cushion. For those who like to color-coordinate with abandon, extra cushion covers will allow for a variety of ‘looks’ for the same, reliable chairs.
Jacquard weaves are nylon-based with a surface coated with PVC, which is resistant to oils, including suntan lotion and the oils our skins produce. Since it is also resistant to mild acids and to alcohols, spilling a drink on your chair will not damage the cushion. The array of colors and patterns available in a Jacquard weave is amazing. If you choose this type of patio cushion, your choice of pattern and color will range from solid to virtually any pattern under the sun. For example, Indian saris are often made with a Jacquard weave.
Spun polyesters will give a cottony feel to patio cushions and mainly come in patterns of flowers. These are long-lasting cushions, so choose your pattern wisely, as you will be looking at it for a long time.
Patio chair cushions come separate or attached. The separate cushions will cushion the back and the seat of a patio chair. Whether attached or separate, a patio chair cushion may be flipped and/or rotated for longer use. These cushions are often double-sided to allow for two looks in the same cushion. One side will be a solid color, and the other side will be patterned with the solid color of the first side being a main color of the pattern on the other side. Alternatively, sometimes one side will be striped, with the other side having a pattern with the colors of the stripes incorporated into it. Lounge chairs have the same options as the more common upright chairs.
No matter what type of patio furniture you have, if you decide to replace the cushions, the replacement patio furniture cushions are available in a variety of fabrics, colors and styles. In a standard chair, you may have two attached cushions with square edges or rounded edges. The thickness of the cushion may be one, two or three inches. In the center of the top and the center of the bottom, you may choose to have a straight line indent, attaching the front of the cushion to the back of the cushion, allowing for less ‘shifting’ of the insides of the cushion. You may have a squared or rounded indent about one third of the way in from the edge of the cushion all the way around it. You may have a seat with a solid square-cut or rounded cut style with a back that has an indent for a headrest. Chaise cushions have all of the above options with the main difference being the length of the seat. Also available are ottoman cushions, seat cushions, bench cushions, and throw pillows specifically made for the out-of-doors.
