The Importance of Patio Pavers

Posted by Joshua in Patio

Patio Pavers are an important part of the patio because they are the foundation. Most homes have a small patio area where people like to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. Rather than just have a plain cement slab, homeowners decorate their patios with patio pavers. Patio pavers are easy to install and can brighten up any patio. They are a great alternative to spending a large amount of money building a deck.

Pavers are a great alternative to other options because they are low maintenance and inexpensive. Installing pavers can be a fun task if you take the time to know everything you need to before you begin. There are easy to find instructional books and tips both at the local hardware store and online. If you have never installed patio pavers then be sure to look into it well.

Some important things to think about before beginning is the foundation below the pavers and what will be sitting on top of them when you are finished. Knowing the function of your patio before you begin will be helpful. You want to create at stable foundation and in order to do this you need to take up about half a foot of dirt. Then be sure to level the base dirt that you will be setting the pavers on.

The dirt is your foundation, be sure you take good care to create a solid foundation because without a good foundation the pavers will eventually shift creating numerous problems down the road. The foundation needs to be stable so be sure the dirt is packed down firmly and each layer that you place on top of it is packed the same. Often, layers of sand and gravel are used to stabilize the foundation.

One issue that often arises is the natural growth of plants in dirt; because you do not want this to ruin your new patio it is important to know how to stop the weeds from growing. There are lots of gardening and landscaping materials available that you can place under the pavers to stop weeds from being a problem. Often, a drop cloth made from a screen type material is used and then layers of gravel or sand will be added to make the foundation solid and prevent growth that can ruin the foundation; you do not want to use plastic to stop natural growth because of the environmental effects.

Patio PaversPavers are set and placed with some kind of design in mind. It is important to remember that you need to create edges that hold everything together. If you are planning a design and need to cut pavers to make a certain shape or angle it is easy to find a place that rents tools you can use to do this. Bricks and cement are often used to help finish the edging and create the stable patio that you want. It is also important to think about water flow off your patio. This is an important issue to research before you start because everyone’s patio and house is different, so water flow issues will be different for every patio.

When designing the patio, the paver layout is going to be the key issue. You want to create a style that is pleasing to the eye and patio pavers can vary in color, shape, and size. Arranging the pavers is going to take some time and planning in order to create the design you want. If your unsure how you want the patio pavers to be placed then stop and ask the experts; you can find experts at the hardware store, online, or you may have a friend who’s already done a patio project.
