Picking the Right Security Camera for Outside Your Home

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Security

One of the best ways to keep your family safe and secure and also to keep an eye on your home when you aren’t around is to install an outdoor security camera system.  But, picking out the best cameras for your home that will last and work well enough to provide that protection is a little harder.  Here are some tips to pick out the best cameras for home protection.

The first thing that you should look at is the quality of the camera.  You don’t need to most high-tech camera on the market, but a quality outdoor security camera will give you much better pictures and let you see more than just blobs.  Since your camera has to work in all lighting conditions, the best ones will have apertures that automatically adjust when light levels change and come fully equipped with night vision for when the sun goes down.

There are several different things you need to look at.  The first is the IP rating of the case.  It should be rated at least IP6 or higher, which will protect it from anything except being submersed in water.  The next is whether you will need a heater or a fan.  Most cameras work in a wide range of temperatures with no problem, but if you live in an area that gets a lot of heat or a lot of cold, odds are you will be testing the limits of your camera.  Make sure the camera keeps working by installing a fan or a heater to keep it within the camera’s operable temperatures.
