Pressure Water Nozzles – Features And Specifications
Posted by Marylou Biederman in General
A pressure washer can make a washing job unbelievably easy. This system consists of three basic parts – a pump, a hose and a nozzle. The basic function of a pressure washer nozzle is to spread the pressurized water so that it reaches the desired place. These pressure water nozzles may seem insignificant but are very important for the whole system to work properly.
These nozzles have an orifice, the size of which differs from one type to the other, which maintains desired pressure at a specific flow rate. At this place in the system, water is restricted and pressure is created. The size of the orifice and the selection of the pump for your pressure washer system are inter-related and proper selection is very necessary for the optimum performance of the system.
There are basically two different types of pressure washer nozzles; the quick disconnect type and NPT threaded MEG type nozzle.
The quick disconnect types has a ¼” male plug that fits into a ¼” female coupler at the end of the wand. An O-ring is placed between the nozzle and female coupler for proper sealing. These O-rings need to be replaced at some point of time, as they will deteriorate. It is very important for the nozzle to seat tightly into the female coupler, because in case of loose fit – the nozzle may cause an injury or it can be lost due to the force of water in the hose.
For ease of identification and selection, these nozzles are color coded. Different colors stand for different spray pattern or degree of spray. The red colored tip is a zero degree nozzle. As the water is concentrated in a very small area, it gives the highest impact. Using this nozzle on fragile surfaces should be avoided, but they are ideal tool for cleaning stains from concrete, removing mud from equipment etc.
- A yellow tip gives a 15-degree fan spray. Holding it at 45-degree angle, it can be used as a scrapper for removing shedding paint.
- The green tip has a 25-degree spray pattern. This type of nozzle is used when the job to be done is relatively easier, like sweeping off the debris from flat surfaces.
- The white tip is more suitable for delicate washing and rinsing because it has a spray pattern, which is 40 degrees wide.
Timely maintenance of the system is important for preventing loss of water pressure and unnecessary water usage. If you are looking for something with more power, you can try a Honda Excell pressure washer, or even a unit that uses hot steam to clean.
