Guide to Installing Sliding Glass Doors

If you want to have a sliding glass doors installed in your home, you do not necessarily need a professional to do it. If you are handy in the house, you can install them yourself. One advantage of these doors is that they are easily installed so long as you have some basic skills and a few tools. If you can install the door yourself, you will be able to save on the cost of hiring a contractor to remove the old set and install the new doors. This will allow you to perhaps upgrade on the new doors if you wish. The cost of hiring a contractor nowadays can sometimes be higher than the cost of the actual doors itself.
Other than the interiors, you can also install sliding doors for access to your patio. The first thing you need to do is to measure the existing door opening. Take your time with this procedure. Measure the height and width at a number of points around the existing frame. Getting the dimensions right will save you a lot of time and money in having to return the item and wait for a new one to arrive.
Prepare the opening by removing the old door and frame together with all the redundant fixings such as nails and screws. Clean the sills and make ready for your new door set. If there is an existing wooden liner make sure it is structurally sound before you install the new unit. If repairs are required do this first. This will avoid having to remove the new door at some time in the future to make repairs.
As soon as you have all the preparation done, you are now ready to install the door. Sliding Patio doors are usually sold in a kit form complete with sliding mechanism, panels and frames. Assembly instructions are provided together with all the necessary fixings.
