Swag Lamps Essential for the Retro Look

Do you remember when swag lamps were everywhere? I think through the 1960’s, a swag lamp was a necessity for a basement refinishing. Well, the resurgence of the hanging lamp is in full swing. If you really look at a swag style lamp, you can see the benefits and why it is becoming popular again. They can be placed just about anywhere, and they don’t take floor space. You can can locate them over a corner table or a pool table. They are almost always plugged directly into the wall, so they are easy to install. The switch is usually mounted in the cord, or it can be connected to a wall switch. These hanging swags were usually used in basements years ago, but now you can find them in most any room of a house. Large lamp shades often go hand in hand with a hanging lamp, but now all sizes are available. There are many different bulb sizes used these days as well. With the whole “green” movement, smaller wattage bulbs are popular. Depending on the shade you choose, the smaller wattage bulbs still put out a lot of light.
Regarding older style lamps, some people have asked what is considered an antique lamp and if certain swag lamps were antiques. It really depends on what you call an antique? I feel that lamps from eras maybe 30-50 years ago are considered antique today. It is really a personal determination as to what is an antique. Generally, if a lamp is older than 75 years, I would definitely consider it an antique. I usually say it does not matter to me. Often the value of a lamp is it’s performance today, unless you happen to be a collector.
When you are out shopping at yard sales and such and you see the term “circa” that just means “about the year of”, so a circa 1913 lamp was made about 1913. Many lamps these days would be better defined as vintage style. I have found that styles change more often than we normally think , and as with swag lamps, an antique to some is a new retro look to others.
