The Tools You Need For A Complete Home Workshop

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Garage, Renovation

Granted, ‘complete’ means different things to different people. But if you don’t have the right tools, you won’t finish a job as well as you could. Here’s some core equipment without which your home workshop will probably feel incomplete.

Bear in mind that many hand tools have power equivalents, and vice versa. Which you want will depend on how much you’ll be using the tool, for what kind of work.

Power drill: saves time and effort for many jobs. Cordless models make it a lot easier putting screws in too.

Hammers: one of the essential hand tools. A claw hammer is usually first choice. Make sure it’s the right weight for you and well put together, as you’ll probably be handling it a lot. Rubber mallets don’t damage the surface they hit, and dead-blow hammers don’t bounce back – both very useful in woodworking.

Miscellaneous extras like chainsaw sharpeners and depth gauge guides will make it easier to maintain your equipment.

Straight slot/Phillips head screwdrivers – handy models offer one handgrip with exchangeable heads in different sizes.

Wrenches: an adjustable wrench is useful all round the house. Sets of socket wrenches, open-end and combination wrenches are all available in standard and metric increments.

Hand-saws, or a power saw, depending on your needs. You may want a miter saw (hand or power) for precision cutting at angles and a jig-saw for wavy lines and awkward holes.

Power router (fixed or combination): for woodworking enthusiasts, several router accessories will go straight onto the ‘essential’ list too.

If you’re working with wood, you will probably want to own a variety of rasps, chisels, planes and sanding blocks or a palm-sander along with different grades of sandpaper. For all sorts of projects, you’ll be glad you invested in a tool belt, pliers, rat-tail files, a tape measure (inches and cm), Allen keys, level(s), a utility knife, a white pencil or fine chalk (for marking up dark wood or metal), tin snips and sturdy scissors.

Don’t forget a good-quality, secure, lightweight extension ladder, preferably in aluminium.

There are plenty more ideas over at Chainsaw Sharpener Tips about how to come up with a maintenance program for your power equipment. It’s well worth devising a plan to keep your gear in tip top shape!
