Three Questions Before You Buy: Futon Mattress

There are so many kinds of futon mattresses to choose from these days, and so many manufacturers. How do you pick the futon mattress that suits your needs and does not break the bank? There are a few simple questions to consider and once you have the answer to those, you’ll get the right futon to fit your needs.

1. Where are you using the futon?
Is this mattress for a futon sofa, or a futon bed? The design of the futon mattress is different for each piece of furniture. This has to do with usability. Think about it: with a sofa, the mattress will be sitting folded in half. With a futon bed, the mattress will flat. The users of each need different things from the futon mattress. The sitter wants a cushy seat and support for the lumbar. The sleeper wants soft comfort and just the right amount of overall support for a good nights sleep.

2. What is your price range?
This always matters. No matter if you are a millionaire, the price always matters. How much do you want to spend? Are you looking for a long-lasting futon mattress? Do you want a cheap futon mattress? Maybe you would even consider a used (but not too used) futon. You will spend more, in general, for a sofa futon mattress. Why? Because the construction of the materials is specialized. In order to have a comfortable sitting experience and in order to keep the mattress from sagging at the top, you need some foam in with the cotton. How much foam and what kind of foam will dictate the price.

3. What is your comfort level?
For many people an inexpensive futon frame with an inexpensive mattress will be just fine. Is the futon for your child’s dorm room? You don’t have to spend a fortune. Is it your new living room sofa? Then maybe you want to spend a bit more on both frame and futon to ensure high quality and longevity. A thinner mattress might be just fine for some folks. You can save money by going with an all-cotton mattress (for either sitting or sleeping). The comfort will not be as great as with a more expensive mattress, but it is always a balance between comfort and price.

However you answer these three questions, the key to buying a great futon mattress is time. Give yourself some time to research the market and time to test out a few mattresses at the store. With luck, this is a purchase you’ll make every ten years, so take some time to get the facts.
