Unfinished Furniture – Creating Your Own High End Look at a Budget Price

Posted by Monique in Furniture

Shopping for furniture can be a challenge especially for the young couple just starting out in a new home and exploring unfinished furniture options can be a great way to fill a home with quality pieces at relatively inexpensive prices. For those on an extremely tight budget, there are pre-assembled wood laminate pieces that can be suitable for the first apartment and perhaps later moved to a guest or child’s room. However, the real value in unfinished furniture is the ability to purchase solid hardwood pieces for up to 50% less than the costs of similar items in a furniture store.

unfinished-furnitureQuality unfinished wood furniture is available from a variety of online unfinished furniture stores as well as retail establishments. One of the greatest benefits of purchasing furnishing pieces that are not finished is the ability to view the quality of the wood itself closely, as well as the method of construction. Any imperfections are readily apparent as well as the methods used to attach the furniture’s parts together. While it may be acceptable to have glued parts or patches in a less expensive wood laminate piece, quality hardwood furniture will use more durable materials in the assembly.

The key to selecting unfinished furniture pieces that can last a lifetime is all in the selection of the wood. There are numerous choices available to suit any taste or décor and doing some research work online is a good way to learn about the types of wood that are most suitable for various furniture pieces as well as the types of finishes that work best. Let us take a look at some of the most popular woods for unfinished pieces.

One of the first woods used in the construction of furniture is Cherry. Its history goes all of the way back to the Greek and Roman empires where it was used to build furniture as early as 400 B.C. In the United States, colonial era cabinet and furniture craftsmen availed themselves of Cherry wood because of its ease of use in woodworking. Just like the fruit itself, cherry wood has a magnificent reddish-brown color and this coloring only richens and deepens with age. Cherry accepts nearly all finished easily because of its uniform grain and is a good choice for the first-time home finisher.

Unfinished oak furniture is an extremely popular choice and also has long been a choice for quality furniture in a large part due to its resilience and durability. White and red oaks are a staple in American furniture manufacturing due to its abundance throughout the country. Oak can range in color from a creamy white all of the way to a pale brown, and sometimes there may even be a hint of red. This wood is treasured by craftsmen because its grain lends itself to numerous patterns depending upon how the logs are sawn into timber. It is a strong and durable hardwood and takes to stains very well in a wide range of finish coloring options.

Another staple of the unfinished furniture industry is pine, of which there are two primary varieties, yellow and white. Yellow pine is often referred to as hard pine because it is a denser and harder wood than the white pine variety. Both are well-suited for furniture construction and white pine in particular is very easy to use with both hand and power tools. Yellow pine as the name implies has pale yellow coloring with brown knots scattered throughout. White pine is lighter in its tone and sometimes has red underpinnings. Both types take finish well though when using a stain, it may be helpful to apply a sealer first in order to ensure a uniform appearance. Unfinished pine furniture tends to be a less expensive choice than some of oaks or maples.

Unfinished furniture is a great value and a nice way for a young couple to mark the beginning of their life together by creating a piece that is uniquely theirs. Shopping online is an easy way to view all of the various options that are available in order to select a piece that provides both quality and value.
