Why Do They Call It A Breakfast Nook?

Posted by Marylou Biederman in Kitchen

A very common occurrence in homes today is the breakfast nook or eat in kitchen. Having this area slightly separate from the kitchen for gathering for meals is often a selling point for homeowners. The breakfast nook is a small area separated from the kitchen by a slight shift in décor or open space used for eating meals or gathering with family and friends. Most families end up eating all of their meals there rather than using a formal dining room. So if we eat almost every meal there then why is it called a breakfast nook? Breakfast is not the only meal eaten in this area.

The name comes from the origins of this room at the turn of the century. At that time, families took their meals in a dining room with servants waiting on them and bringing food to them from the kitchen. However, not every family could afford servants for every meal nor could they afford an elaborate breakfast. Instead, they gathered together in a small area off of the kitchen for their morning meal. Even if they couldn’t afford servants, they probably still ate their evening meal in the dining room as a more formal affair. So, the breakfast nook was just that, an area where the family ate breakfast.

So why has the name persisted? Not many people, even the very wealthy, have servants waiting on them for meals and the kitchen eating area has become the place where almost every family eats their non formal meals. Perhaps the name has persisted through the years because the morning is when this area of the house is most enjoyable. Most breakfast nooks have a breakfast table set up near at least on window in order to take advantage of the morning sunlight. People enjoy sitting in the morning sun with a cup of coffee, the newspaper, or breakfast.
