Well before winter comes you need to make sure your home is well protected from the effects of severe weather. This should be carried out in the autumn time so that any remedial action required can be completed in time to ensure that repairs are not necessary during the colder months.
You should check the main roof for slipped tiles or slates and for leaking joints in the rainwater gutters. Make sure all the weather proofing flashings are in place around the chimneys and abutments. The last thing you want is to have someone climb up onto your roof during winter to carry out repairs. Check all the windows and doors for any necessary adjustments necessary, closing off draughts. The heating boiler should be serviced to prevent any breakdowns during the colder months.
During the winter time burst pipes can be a major problem. If you are unlucky enough to have a burst pipe, the most likely place that it will happen is in the roof space. The roof space should be inspected for any un-insulated pipes and water tanks. Water filled pipes and tanks can freeze and burst, allowing water to flood out, which can cause severe damage to finishes and contents. 
Should you have a burst pipe, go directly to the water rising main and switch of the stop cock. This will prevent any further water entering the pipe network. With the stop cock switch off, go to every other water tap in the house and switch them on to drain off any excess water left in the pipes. This action will go towards reducing the damage caused by the burst pipe.
